Remediation of Leachate Contaminated Groundwater in Unconfined Aquifer by MSL System

The Mae-Hia disposal site that covers 12 ha, was used as a waste dump for Chiang Mai municipal wastes during 1958 until 1989.

At the beginning period, the wastes were disposed onto the land and covered with soil. During 1973-1983, open dumping also was applied in some part of the disposal site. Since 1983, solely open dumping was applied due to the lack of soil and the increasing amount of wastes. The groundwater in the unconfined aquifer in the area located downstream of the ground water flow has been contaminated by leachate generated from the waste disposal site. Therefore, remediation of the groundwater quality is necessary. Soil has been used as a media for water and wastewater treatment for a long history due to its remediation properties and low cost. However, clogging is the major limitation. Multi-soillayering (MSL) systems have been developed in order to increase the treatment efficiency of wastewater using soil by minimizing the clogging problem. A MSL system consists of a mixture of soil and other materials that enhance the treatment efficiency, such as zeolite, saw dust, charcoal and iron pellets.
