Operational Experience of the site adapted AR&B System Brunn a. G., Austria
Brownfield development in urban areas, requires innovative environmental remediation and protection solutions to allow the reuse of contaminated sites.
This process has been called "brownfield recycling". The Adsorptive Reactor and Barrier (AR&B) System, implemented at a former site of a tar factory and linoleum production plant in Brunn am Gebirge near Vienna, Austria, allowed the proposed land use without undue delay during the construction phase of the established business park.
The industrial use of the site over more than a century had caused a contamination of the unsaturated and saturated zone by residuals of a tar factory (PAH, HC, BTEX, Phenoles) und linoleum production (HC, traces of CHC, HM). Contaminated soil and production residuals in the unsaturated zone were removed by excavation. To prevent the propagation of the groundwater contamination, an In-Situ protection system was implemented, deploying the local hydrogeological and technical premises.
