Risk-based performance assessment of Geosynthetic Clay Liners

Both mineral barriers (natural clay liners) and synthetic materials (geomembranes) are widely used in the environmental applications to avoid spreading of contaminants or to isolate contaminated land from its environment. Geosynthetic Clay Liners (GCL-s) gain greater share against traditional compacted clay liner systems in environmental applications due to some of their favorable installation and technical features or simply because of the lack of appropriate clay mines near the site.

The users of GCL-s must be aware of the benefits and limitations of these materials. GCL-s have very good impermeability features, thus in many cases their applicability as bottom liners is raised. In this case the GCL-s compatibility with leachate must be discussed. Such assessments for natural clay barriers are widely known and it is proved that when evaluating leachet-liner compatibility the formulation, change and thickness of diffuse double-layer must be investigated. Our institution being a leader higher education unit in environmental geotechnics in Hungary has conducted laboratory tests on several brands of GCL-s before their application in Hungary.
