From EU waste management to the Austrian Waste Prevention Strategy
In order to reduce the amount of waste to be landfilled, the European Union issued a Landfill Directive in 1999.
While the implementation of this directive already shows some positive results (some waste streams are diverted from landfills), the European Commission works also on some more fundamental solutions and has communicated the “Thematic Strategy on the Prevention and Recycling of Waste” and has proposed that EU-Member-States prepare waste prevention programs.
In parallel the Austrian ministry of the Environment has prepared a waste prevention and recycling strategy for the current Federal Waste Management Plan 2006.
