Alternatives for the improvement of the MSW management in Zavidovici (Bosnia-Herzegovina)

Zavidovici is a small town situated in the centre of Bosnia Herzegovina; its territory is 540 km2 wide and comprises about 130 villages. In 2005 the local Municipality asked CeTAmb to start a study concerning the removal of the numerous illegal dumpsites present in the villages.

The results, reported in this paper, highlighted that the waste in-situ burial is the most suitable solution since it is both the shortest and cheapest. However, it is essential that the illegal dumpsites reclamation is associated with activities organized to avoid the birth of new dumpsites, as: starting sensitizing campaigns addressed to the population, placing notices warning not to abandon wastes, increasing controls and sanctions against trespassers. Furthermore, an efficient waste collection system serving all the local communities should be implemented.
