Carbon Capture at the Twence Project: A Comprehensive Overview

The Twence carbon capture and utilization project in the Netherlands shows how largescale carbon capture can be effectively integrated into waste-to-energy operations. Starting with pilot testing in 2015, the initiative has grown into a full-scale facility that captures 12.5 tons of CO? per hour. The plant uses SLB Capturi’s Advanced Carbon Capture technology and the modular Just Catch 100 system to achieve high capture efficiency, low energy use, and food?grade CO? purity. Captured CO? is liquefied and supplied to greenhouses and industrial users, which lowers fossil-based emissions and supports circular value chains. The project secured success through robust permitting, lifecycle assessments, long-term offtake agreements, and national and EU funding schemes. Twence provides important lessons in regulatory alignment, modular deployment, operational optimization, and CO? value-chain development, and now serves as a model for scalable CCUS implementation across Europe.

Carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) is a cornerstone in the global fight against climate change. By capturing carbon dioxide (CO?) emissions from industrial processes and either reusing or storing them, CCUS offers a pathway to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions while supporting the transition to a sustainable, low-carbon economy. The Twence carbon capture and utilization (CCU) project in the Netherlands is a prime example of how innovative technologies and strategic partnerships can drive progress in this field. This paper provides a detailed overview of the Twence project, its history, lessons learned, and the unique contributions of the key partner in the initiative, SLB Capturi, a global carbon removal and reduction solutions company.
