4th Hamburg International Environmental Law Conference (2019): “Of Ships and of Shores, of Ports and of Profits: Responsible Maritime Governanceâ€
The 4th Hamburg International Environmental Law Conference (HIELC) took place from 4-5 April 2019 with the overarching topic “Of Ships and of Shores, of Ports and of Profits – Responsible Maritime Governanceâ€.
Like the 3rdHIELC in 2016,which addressed the topic “ASea Change for SustainableOceanResourceGovernanceâ€, the 4thHIELC focused on ocean governance, marine environmental law, and the law of marine resources. While the 3rd HIELC had a strong focus on sustainability in ocean governance, the 4thHIELCsucceeded in highlighting the importance of both sustainable maritime governance and responsible maritime governance as guiding principles in international regulation. The conference's emphasis on shipping and ports also conveniently aligned contemporary topics of public international law with issues relevant to the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. Participants from various jurisdictions both attended and contributed to the conference.
