The Borealis Borcycleâ„¢ M Demo Plant – Borcycleâ„¢ M as Best Practice
Borcycleâ„¢ M is the mechanical recycling platform of Borealis, setting new standards for what is possible in mechanical recycling, enabling previously unattainable applications from cosmetics packaging through to mobility.
At the Borcycleâ„¢ M Demo Plant, Borealis works on new concepts for the plastic waste feedstock as the starting point of successful recycling. One example is PP from lightweight packaging (LWP) sorting: The DSD 324-0 and DSD 324-1 specifications permit a 2D fraction (films, flexible packaging) of up to 2% and 6%, respectively. However, in practice, up to 15-20% of 2D are regularly observed, leading to unnecessarily high reject amounts. Innovative pre-treatment of feedstock at the LWP sorting plant ensures that in the Borcycle â„¢ M Demo Plant rejects are minimized while flexible packaging ends up in specialized film recycling or, especially multilayer packaging, in chemical recycling. In the Borealis-Reclay jointventure Recelerate, new best practice methods for raising the recycling quota are developed whilst preserving the high quality of mechanical recycling.
