Assessing Climate Neutrality and Circularity in LCA – Methodology and Application in a Case Study
Climate neutrality and circularity are two main challenges and can only be addressed by the methodology of dynamic Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), where GHG emissions, resource demand and material recovery are calculated over the life time from construction, operation until the end of life management.
A methodological framework to assess the climate neutrality potential and the circularity potential is developed and applied in a case study to compare trucks with different propulsion & fuel combinations. Based on the life cycle material flows the Material Circularity Index (MCI) is used to assess the circularity potential (0% - 100%) and the climate neutrality potential is based on the radiative forcing (W/m²) in 2100. The results show that the Circularity Potential and the Climate Neutrality Potential add additional environmental relevant categories not covered yet in LCA.
