Comparing the sustainability of active and passive groundwater containment systems for the treatment of PFAS plumes

Two approaches can be used to stop a PFAS plume: hydraulic containment or passive filtration. Hydraulic containment is an ex situ method where groundwater is pumped above ground to create a hydraulic barrier, a.k.a. a capture zone, in the aquifer that the plume cannot move beyond.

An independent sustainability analysis of remediation approaches for PFAS (perand polyfluoroalkyl substances) in groundwater was completed at an international commercial airport site in the United Kingdom (UK). The analysis showed that in situ remediation with colloidal activated carbon (CAC) was significantly more sustainable and cost-effective than two alternative pump-and-treat approaches. Accordingly, the in situ CAC remedy was implemented at the study site and another UK airport, with outstanding performance demonstrated for both.
