I-SORT3Râ„¢, a computer vision system to perform remote waste sorting
I-SORT3Râ„¢ is a semi-automatic device which allows operators to sort waste without touching it.
This process is based on a vision system that provides an image displayed on a touch screen on which the operator selects intruders from a predominant waste stream. Air nozzles eject selected objects automatically. Images are acquired by a linescan camera with a specific lighting system designed in order to ensure a realistic visual rendering of objects. This paper describes the way I-SORT3Râ„¢ works and gives some results obtained in the Material Recovery Facility (MRF) of Amiens (France) where an industrial prototype has been operated since September 2013 as part of the quality control process of plastic packaging from source separated collection of municipal waste.
