An Extensive Environmental Protection Program During the Bonfol Landfill Remediation

The bci Betriebs-AG was commissioned by the Basle Chemical Industry (BCI) to professionally and sustainably remediate this landfill. During the filling, the waste has been mixed up and was exposed to the ambient air and rainwater. For safety and environmental reasons, it has been decided to excavate all the waste by using a remote-controlled grapple inside of a ventilated hall. Without any separation step, each grapple of waste is shredded, prepared, filled in containers and transported by train to hazardous waste incineration plants in Germany and Belgium. During the definite remediation of the landfill, running from spring 2010 to spring 2016, an extensive environmental protection programme is implemented. To ensure the protection of ground and surface water, the drained leachate of the landfill and the waste water from remediation activities are cleaned in an on-site water-treatment plant.
