Lodgment of Polluted Sludge in Geosynthetical Tubes
Sludge often arise as unintentional spin-off product in industrial processes. With regards to Transport (e.g. thixotropy, high water content) and further recycling (especially when contaminated) sludge is very inconvenient. However, with improved technical features sludge material might become usable as construction material for example in dams and embankments.
Otherwise it Needs to be deposited with structural protection according to its contamination. Sludge of industrial origin like tailings is often stored in ponds/lagoons close to the production facility. Depending on the amount of sludge produced, the duration of the operation and the finally intended use these ponds can have a size up to several thousands of cubic meters. In there cent past cases are known to the public where storage ponds depending on local, political and economic conditions have potentially not been planned, executed or conducted inadequate to present technical understanding. The Ajka alumina sludge spill in 2010 is one tragic example of consequences due to the storage of contaminated sludge.
