Deformation Analysis of the Landfill “Rautenweg“ using 3D-Finite Element Modelling
The landfi ll Rautenweg is the largest landfill in Austria and operated by the city of Vienna. The landfi ll is sealed by so-called “Wiener Dichtwandkammersystem“ (Vienna Cutt-Off Chamber). The system comprises two parallel diaphragm walls embedded into the impermeable stratum by 25 m. Counterfort are placed between the two diaphragm walls in regular intervals.
The landfill body is gradually rising since the opening in the 1960s. The design level of fillis about 45 m above ground. Only limited movement and deformations are allowed in order to ensure unrestricted functionality of the Vienna Cutt-Off Chamber. At first a 2D-finite-element-model was established for selected cross sections to simulate the design of the landfill. Thus, the fundamental deformability behaviour of the landfill body as well as the lateral cut-off system was investigated. This paper reports on the complete 3D-finite-element model of the landfill Rautenweg. Only with a comprehensive model it is possible to reflect the crucial deflection of the cut-off system. The landfill body is enclosed by overlapping dams made of ash, slag and concrete. The design aswell as different construction stages have been modelled leading to a complex 3D-fi nite-element model. It is based on survey data obtained by remote sensing and available project data.
