Alternative Treatment Methods for Municipal Solid Waste Incineration Fly Ash

In Austria thermal utilization of waste results in approximately 50,000 tons of air pollution control (APC) residues. These APC – residues include boiler ash, filter ash and filter cake from waste water purification of wet flue gas cleaning systems. The present work focuses on flyashes (Boiler and filter ash). Filter cake is not considered due to its relatively small amounts.

Current fly ashmanagement strategies in use are
- stabilization of fly ashes with cement prior disposal at non-hazardous waste landfills,
- export of flyashes from hazardous waste incineration to Germany and subsurface disposal athazardous waste landfills and
- disposal of fly ashes at non-hazardous waste landfills without pre-treatment.The latter is exclusively applicable to fly ashes generated at fluidized bed incinerators. In anongoing research project (Christian Doppler Laboratory for Anthropogenic Resources) alternativetreatment methods, that allow flyash disposal at non-hazardous waste landfills without theaddition of cement, are investigated. The main objectives of these treatment methods are the reductionof the total content of water soluble salts and mercury, as well as the leaching of selectedheavy metals. Additionally the potential recovery of valuable components out of these flyashes is investigated.
