Primary Gravel Production at Industrial Locations

The consortium ARGE GROUND UNIT produces CE-certified gravel and sand from contaminated excavated materials in a wet separation plant on the area of voestalpine Stahl GmbH. The products are used as aggregate for concrete and for unbound and hydraulically bound base layers. The treated materials come from various construction projects on the site of voestalpine in Linz. This area is industrially used since nearly 100 years. The material contains typical pollutions from steel production of former decades. Without treatment in the separation plant of ARGE GROUND UNIT, it would be necessary to carry nearly all excavations to a landfill.

This - more or less contaminated - sandy gravel is ideal to be separated by this plant into grain classes. Normally the pollutants ad here to the fine fractions. These are washed of the coarse Stones and are dispersed in the process water, where they get filtered out as pressed sludge. So the pollutants are concentrated in the fine material. The treatment consists of a dry processing unit (mobile crushing and screening) for an optionally pre-treatment and a water-supported separation plant. After the removal of iron parts through magnet separator, the material is transported into awashing drum. Most light and floating parts are washed out in the washing drum by the counterflow principle. Cohesive soil parts disperse in the washing water. In the next step, the material reaches a double deck preliminary screen. The oversized material (> 32 mm) is falling into a crusher and could be passed into processing circuit again. The undersized grain (< 4 mm) flowsforward with the processing water. The middle fraction (4 – 32 mm) attains into a two axles logwasher. The input of mechanic energy by rotating and friction causes the cleaning of the coarse parts.
