Sustainable Remediation – New Methods and Indicators

Within the last decade “sustainable remediation”, i.e. enhancing the “sustainability” of con-taminated site remediation by applying the principles of sustainable development has been discussed intensively at an international level by different networks and stakeholder groups under different perspectives (SURF networks, NICOLE, Common Forum and others).

Among others, the Need for methods and indicators to compare different remediation options regarding their sustainability has been identified explicitly as one commonly accepted outcome of these discussions. Some of the mentioned networks already published some indicator sets and “tool-boxes”, which mostly represent rather holistic approaches, making them difficult to apply at a specific site level. As the principle of sustainable development is claiming intergenerational equity in terms of environmental, economic and social implications, comparing different options regarding their “sustainability” in meeting pre-defined remediation goals, like environmental standards, can be seen as a classical multi-criteria Problem.
