Strategic Challenges for the Development of a Sustainable Resource Management

The Austrian waste management industry finds itself in a huge area of confl icts. The amounts of waste are declining, national waste utilization plants see themselves confronted with overcapacities, profit margins are getting successively smaller and the much-cited consolidation still has not happened.

An intensive price fight for waste amounts on the national waste market is the result. Due to the financial situation and the fierce competition within the branch there are al-most nooptions for action left for the Austrian waste management enterprises. Markets are being bought over quantities, as there is no clear potential for differentiation among waste management Enterprises that could possibly be perceived by customers. Lack of differentiation and high recycling capacities are the reasons that force waste management enterprises to adjust prices down. This resulting price spiral not only influences the much-debated recycling “quality” within the branch but as well minimizes the possibility for R&D-projects and hinders development. Therefore it seems to be necessary to start questioning the current business model of the waste management industry.
