Application of Laboratory Tests for In-Situ-Groundwater Remediation

Laboratory tests, which are conducted at near-natural conditions and which consider the scale-factors between laboratory and field, are indispensable prerequisite for the analysis of groundwater treatment processes.

In addition, the laboratory tests are crucial to determine the parameter of groundwater flow as a solid basis for decision making in remediation project planning, controlling, and evaluation. In compliance with these requirements, a laboratory test to determine first order kinetics of microbial degradation has been developed and applied by the companies BGD and GICON. For the first time, this test provided evidence for the impact of immobile porosity on pollutant degradation. We developed a new method to infiltrate reactive substances for in-situ-groundwater remediation that was part of the research project "Verbundprojekt: Entwicklung eines Verfahrens zur in-situ Schadstoffminderung MKW- und BTEX belasteter Standorte – Teilprojekt 2: Testfeldaufbau und -betrieb, Transportmodellierung", funded by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research. The method was successfully applied at the Vereinigten Molkereizentralen GmbH & Co. KG in Berlin, Germany. The remediation objectives were met to 100 % regarding time and to 86 % regarding targeted pollution values.
