New Investigations on the Recycling of Used Tire-Rubber
Used rubber, especially tire-rubber, is a rapidly growing source of waste materials while recycling of these waste materials is a very common problem. Typically they are used in energy recovery, i.e. thermal recycling during the production of cement. Especially due to recent changes in law the recycling of these materials becomes a stronger issue. It is State of the art to crush old tires to get pellets, powder or buffing dust. These forms of the rubber can for example be used as fillers in the production of new rubber products. It is also possible to use the pellets to construct mats, the underlay of sporting grounds or molded parts.
This work is supposed to examine the impact of different material composition (rubber volume, glue volume or rubber pellet size) and the impact of variation of processing conditions (temperature, time and pressure) on the production of mats. The possibility of using the investigated recycled rubber as underlay of sporting grounds was observed. Additionally the applicability of water solvent glue as well as the rate of devulcanization was investigated to produce mats without the use of glue. The results of the first part can be interpreted that the water solvent glue, due to the lower costs, is suitable for specific usage in some industrial fields. Nevertheless the use of water solvent glue in wet conditions is not recommended. The investigation of the devulcanized rubber showed that a rate of 12 % is enough to produce mats that are optical homogene. A big amount of industrial potential lies in this process, due to the fact that this rate of devulcanization could be reached with a new industrial method which is even cheaper and technically easier to implement. With the right processing parameters and technique the production of glue-free mats with great optical and mechanical properties can be realized.
