Giant´s Park Regeneration Project - Belfast, Northern Ireland
Belfast City Council is delighted to be able to present this paper to share our knowledge about redeveloping a closed waste landfill site - Giant's Park. Belfast City Council has a major waste landfill fill site within the City Boundary. It was the municipal waste site serving the greater metropolitan area of Belfast with a population of 650,958.
It was closed to waste land filling in 2007. It is now the largest regeneration site in Belfast and has strategic importance for the City. The Council is preparing plans to redevelop the site to create new opportunities for economic and social developments that will bring significant benefits for the Citizens of Belfast. Giant's Park site is located 3 km north of the Belfast City Centre. The attractive maritime site on the edge of Belfast Lough comprises 138 hectares. It has good transportation access to the Motorway, and is located 250 metres from Belfast Port. Giant's Park has been reclaimed from Belfast Lough, creating 138 hectares of development land for the City. Since 1973, 10 million tons of waste material has been dumped at the site. The average depth of waste material is 20 metres.
