The role of seafronts in the spatial development and planning of Greek spa towns
Greece is a country rich in thermal springs, the majority of which -due to tectonic reasons etc- is located along the coastal zone. The presence of thermal springs in this specific part of the Greek territory has contributed -in the passing of time- not only to the growth of spa tourism, but also to the urbanization of those areas.
However, this development has caused a lot of problems due to the lack of comprehensive and integrated planning. As a result, new built-up areas are characterized by low quality building construction and architecture. In this framework, the present paper deals with the role and the significance that seafronts have -or should have- in the spatial development of spa towns. In addition, it tries to specify the kind of urban planning that should be adopted in order to take advantage in the most appropriate way of the water elements in question.
