An integrated modeling procedure for thermal discharges into coastal waters
An integrated modeling procedure is presented for the calculation of the hydrodynamics and the excess temperature of coastal waters, during the discharge of cooling waters from power stations. The procedure, which consists of five steps, involves the use of two models.
The first model is applied in the Near Field Region (NFR) and the second in the Far Field Region (FFR); the calculations of these models are connected via a coupling algorithm. The procedure is applied to a case study using the NFR model CORMIX and the FFR model suite FLOW-3DL. Firstly, CORMIX calculates the flow velocities (via CORJET) and temperature differences (T) in the NFR; then, this information is used as input for the model suite FLOW-3DL, which calculates the flow field and Tin the FFR using the 3-D non-steady state equations for the flow (continuity and momentum) and heat transport, expressed in layer formulation.
