Sorption kinetics of PAH by using various sorbents

Polycyclic aromatic hyrocarbons (PAH), which are a large group of organic compounds with two or more fused rings, are an important threat to the environment. They occur in the aquatic environment as the result of oil spills, ship traffic, pyrolytic processes, domestic and industrial wastewater discharges.

Sorbents are used as an effective technique for the removal of oil from water. In this study, two different kinds of sorbents among the several sorbent materials are used for the removal of PAHs and their removal efficiencies are compared. One of them is the most commonly used commercial sorbent in oil spill cleanup which is based on nonwoven polypropylene (PP), and the other one is a novel macroporous sorbent based on butyl rubber (BR). By using these sorbents, PAH removal tests were implemented with acenaphthene (ACE) and pyrene (PYR) in the laboratory and with the seawater samples containing PAH. For the evaluation of laboratory tests, the sorption kinetics parameters were calculated. The results show that BR sorbent has better characteristics compared to PP sorbent, representing the efficiency of BR sorbent for PAH removal in polluted sites.
