Establishment of the first Greek bioenergy district in Western Thessaloniki

Biomass produced energy has an important role to play in meeting EU energy targets. In Greece, biomass represents a very promising, but unexploited, renewable energy source. Aim of the present work is to promote the wide scale biomass energy production in Greece, by establishing the first Greek Bioenergy-District in Thessaloniki.

The Municipalities of the Prefecture of Thessaloniki were assessed for their suitability as Bio-energy Districts. The assessment was carried out using the “Bioenergy-Districts analysis model” developed by the “RENEWED-IEE” Project. The model was applied for each Municipality and the results were illustrated in GIS maps. The municipalities at the western regions of the Prefecture of Thessaloniki were selected as the most suitable to host the first Greek Bioenergy-District. A study was elaborated in order to develop an economically, socially and environmentally sustainable bioenergy chain in the selected area.
