The impact of mining activities in the quality of coastal sea waters

The quality of coastal sea waters downstream of a major mixed sulphide mining and milling industrial facility located in North-Aegean Sea of Greece was examined. The factors influencing the quality of coastal waters are the natural mineralization, the remains of past mining activities, the washout phenomena following precipitation events and the discharge of the treated mine waters.

The comparison of the obtained concentration levels with the environmental limits suggests that the quality of the coastal sea water complies with all the requirements imposed by the legislation. Moreover, the majority of the measured parameters appear to have a decreasing temporal trend, reflecting the materialization of significant rehabilitation projects, construction of impermeable disposal sites, etc. The concentrations of dissolved heavy metals exhibited uniformity in the surface and in the bottom of the sea, indicating a minimal impact from the polluted sea sediment.
