Implementation of an integrated environmental management system in the Piraeus port
The object of this paper is to present and describe the efforts of the port of Piraeus to transform itself to a port with an integrated environmental management system. The port has set in the core of its environmental efforts the realization of the vision of a high standards port, both in economic and environmental performance, respecting in parallel its employees, port users and neighbours.
Tangible results have already come along such as the ones presented in this paper. Based on practical experience from the port of Piraeus, the main benefits and experiences gained by implementing the PERS the last four years are discussed. Furthermore, the driving forces for applying an EMS in seaports and the relevant current trends in Europe are summarised. The pragmatic approach adopted for this case study port may reasonably be recommended for consideration by other port authorities as a cost-effective way of developing EMS for their own, special circumstances.
