Development and application of environmental management systems in ports
The benefits of adopting a management approach are widely reported and significantly accepted by many leading industrial companies and organizations. Towards this direction, many ports currently seek to respond timely to the new global trend: the integration of the environmental protection and sustainable principles into a port authority's daily operation.
The paper identifies the need for an integrated environmental management of ports, discusses the current trends in port environmental management and highlights the particularities for the application of Environmental Management Systems in ports. As a case study, the benefits and the results achieved so far in the Hellenic ports of Thessaloniki and Piraeus through the development and application of PERS (Port Environmental Review System) standard are summarised.
