Personal protective equipment to minimize the shipyard production processes health effects on shipyard workers

Production processes of shipyards are divided into two main divisions under new shipbuilding and ship repair industry. The shipbuilding and ship repair industry is the combination of different production processes such as surface preparation, painting and coating, machining and metalworking operations, solvent cleaning and degreasing, welding and cutting operations. The inputs of these processes are various types of products and raw material such as primarily steel and other metals, paints and solvents, blasting abrasives, and machine and cutting oils.

The outcome of these processes are in different forms (solid, liquid, and gaseous) of wastes and pollutants as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), hazardous air pollutants (HAPs), particulates (PM), waste solvents, oils and resins, metal bearing sludge and wastewater, waste paint, waste paint chips, and sent abrasives. Especially during welding, blasting and painting processes, personal protective equipment (PPE) usage is required for shipyard workers. During this study, welding, blasting and painting processes are examined and Personal Protective Equipments (PPE) are selected accordingly. The selection of appropriate PPE is based upon the hazard assessment. Procedures for selection of PPE may include: identification of the potential hazards, determination of the types of protective equipment available for the present hazards, evaluation of the effectiveness of the PPE, selection of appropriate protective equipment, selection of a variety of sizes to properly fit all users, as well as, selection of specified equipment of the process.
