Histopathology and bioaccumulation of metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and linear alkylbenzene compounds in mussels transplanted along São Paulo coast – Brazil
This study aimed to assess the contamination of coastal waters around São Paulo integrating bioaccumulation and histopathological analyses in the brown mussel Perna perna. For this purpose, organisms were transplanted from a farmed area (Cocanha) to two different zones (São Sebastião Channel and Santos Bay) for three months of exposure.
The mussels transplanted to São Sebastião Channel showed bioaccumulation of Cr, Zn, Hg and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), whereas organisms transplanted to Santos bay showed increased concentrations of Cr, Zn, Pb, PAH, and linear alkylbenzenes. The gills exhibited histological alterations such as fusions of filaments, hypertrophies of mucous cells and parasite infections. This integrated approach for mussels kept under field conditions could be considered a useful tool for marine environmental assessments providing a better comprehension of the bioavailability and effects of contaminants in coastal zones.
